Happy Lunar New Year, Parents & Teachers!

STEM and sustainability continue to be front and center in Bear Essential’s February issue. The main feature includes the 28 Days of Sustainability Challenge and has a garden design drawing contest from ASU’s Sustainability Solutions Service! These are just part of the Sustainability Solutions Festival, which started its theme of “Together” this month.

The Service also offers teachers who have participated in its Teachers’ Academy Workshops in 2019 or 2020 eligibility for additional stipends for completing a sustainability project at their school or school district: https://sustainability.asu.edu/sustainabilitysolutions/programs/teachersacademy/

Continuing to promote STEM statewide, the Arizona SciTech Festival is also this month and has four informative pages in this issue of Bear! For a full listing of the fantastic STEM virtual happenings, go to http://scitechinstitute.org/scitech-festival/ .

The February standards-based Classroom Worksheets are posted online and augment this issue. Please forward this email to your teaching teammates, and they can sign up for these notifications online at BearEssentialNews.com.

For this month’s SciTech Signature Event, Bear Essential is offering a fascinating Young Reporter Zoom Science Night with the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and Saguaro National Park West. On Thursday, Feb. 25 at 4 p.m., live desert critters will be featured by ASDM and one of the Park’s Future Rangers will talk about wildlife corridors and how technology is being used to monitor the wildlife that uses them. Young Reporters can then ask questions for additional facts and quotes to use in their stories! Young Reporters who would like to participate need to email Julie@bearessentialnews.com. Those who want to be a Young Reporter need to print out the sign-up form fill it out, take a photo of the signed form and email it to Julie. She will send a link to see if you want to attend the Zoom Science Night.

Young Reporter Advisers—please encourage your reporters to keep submitting their great stories. Kids can also focus on STEM reporting, if that interests them more (see page 19 of the newspaper).

Wishing you good health & happiness,

Stephen B Gin
